Compliance-aware workflow
Translate Sensitive Personal Data only after local masking
When a document contains Sensitive Personal Data, PII, or broader Personal Information, the translation risk is not only language quality. The question is which values leave the device when text is sent to an AI provider.
Veil Translate is a compliance-aware workflow, not legal advice: parse the file in the browser, review suggested sensitive entities, replace confirmed values with stable placeholders, then translate the masked text.
Short answer
Do not send raw Sensitive Personal Data directly to an AI translation endpoint. Review and mask PII, Personal Information and sensitive entities locally first, then send the placeholder version; the remaining de-identified body text is still sent as plaintext to the provider you choose.
PII, Personal Information and Sensitive Personal Data
PII usually refers to values that can identify a person directly or indirectly, such as names, ID numbers, phone numbers, emails and bank accounts. Personal Information can be broader because context around a person may also matter.
Sensitive Personal Data usually signals higher risk or stronger control requirements. Veil Translate does not decide your legal basis or regulatory duties; it helps reduce exposure of confirmed sensitive entities before translation.
Recommended translation workflow
Upload a DOCX, XLSX, PPTX or text-based PDF. Parsing, detection, masking, mapping storage and restoration run in the browser. Remove false positives, add missed values manually, then translate.
The translation request contains placeholder text such as ⟦NAME_1⟧, ⟦ID_1⟧ and ⟦EMAIL_1⟧. After translation returns, the browser restores real values from the local mapping table.
Example
Customer Li Wen has passport E12345678, email liwen@example.com, and payment account 6222020202020202020.
Customer ⟦NAME_1⟧ has passport ⟦ID_1⟧, email ⟦EMAIL_1⟧, and payment account ⟦BANK_1⟧.
客户⟦NAME_1⟧的护照号为⟦ID_1⟧,邮箱为⟦EMAIL_1⟧,付款账号为⟦BANK_1⟧。
Boundary and responsibility
This is not compliance certification and it is not legal advice. Veil Translate protects detected and confirmed sensitive entities only; unconfirmed content and the remaining de-identified body text may still be sent to your chosen provider.
If a document is subject to company policy, industry regulation, or cross-border transfer limits, confirm the approved workflow before using an external AI translation endpoint.
Frequently asked questions
Can Sensitive Personal Data be translated with AI?
It depends on your organization policy, legal basis and provider choice. Veil Translate provides a local masking workflow before translation; it does not decide compliance for you.
Does it handle both PII and Personal Information?
It suggests entities such as names, IDs, phones, emails, bank accounts, USCC numbers and organizations, but you must review candidates and add missed values before sending text.
Is masking enough to remove all risk?
No. Confirmed entities are replaced with placeholders, but the remaining de-identified body text is still sent as plaintext and may contain confidential context.
