Veil Translate vs mainstream online translators: which workflow fits your document?

A comparison based only on translation quality misses the first architectural question: what reaches the translation service? A public text box, a document-upload product, a cloud API and a browser-local masking workflow expose different data and demand different amounts of setup.

This article compares product workflows, not company trustworthiness. Google Translate, DeepL Free, DeepL Pro and Azure Translator also have different policies, so a single “mainstream translators” privacy label would be misleading. Facts below were checked against official pages on July 22, 2026.

The main difference is the data path

In a conventional online translator, the service needs the submitted text or document to translate it. Veil Translate inserts a local preprocessing stage: the browser parses the file, detects candidate names, IDs, phone numbers, emails, bank details, unified social credit codes and organizations, and asks you to review the list. Confirmed values become stable placeholders such as ⟦NAME_1⟧ before translation.

In BYOK mode, the browser sends masked text and your session-only API key directly to the OpenAI-compatible endpoint you select. In the free managed mode, masked text passes through Veil Translate’s fixed proxy to Cloudflare Workers AI. In both modes, the original file, filename, mapping table, plaintext sensitive values and API key never go through Veil Translate’s server; the remaining body text is still readable by the selected translation provider.

What mainstream services do especially well

Google Translate minimizes friction and supports common office document uploads in its web interface. DeepL separates its free and Pro data handling and offers a polished document workflow. Azure Translator is designed for integration: its synchronous API returns one translated file directly, while asynchronous batch translation uses Blob storage and supports larger pipelines. Azure also documents OCR support for scanned PDFs.

Veil Translate does not try to replace those strengths. It has no OCR for scans, automatic sensitive-entity detection is strongest for Chinese and English, PDF layout is only closely preserved, and BYOK endpoints must permit browser CORS. Its value is the review-and-mask boundary before any translation request.

Translation quality cannot be ranked honestly without a test set

Quality changes by language pair, domain, terminology and document style. Veil Translate itself is not a translation model: quality depends on the provider and model you choose, while its placeholder protocol protects the values you reviewed and its local glossary enforces chosen terminology.

For a real selection, build a representative test set, remove or mask any data you cannot share, then score terminology accuracy, omissions, formatting, numbers and names. Legal, medical and financial output still needs qualified human review regardless of the service.

  • Use the same source passages and evaluation rubric for every service.
  • Include tables, headers, footnotes and long sentences—not only clean prose.
  • Record both translation errors and privacy/compliance requirements.

Veil Translate’s privacy boundary, stated precisely

Veil Translate protects sensitive entities that are detected and confirmed. It does not encrypt the full document for translation, and unidentified PII or confidential context in the remaining prose can still leave the device. Always review the candidate list and add missed values manually.

The public managed endpoint must also be treated as capable of receiving personal data from modified or unofficial clients. Veil Translate’s application layer does not persist or content-log request bodies, but the named upstream provider still processes the masked text under its own terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Veil Translate more accurate than Google Translate or DeepL?

There is no universal answer. Veil Translate uses the provider and model you select, so accuracy depends on that model, the language pair and the document. Its distinct feature is local masking, not a claim of universally better output.

Does Veil Translate keep the whole document offline?

The original file, mapping table and confirmed sensitive values stay in the browser. Masked body text still leaves the device for translation, either directly to your BYOK endpoint or through the free managed proxy to Cloudflare Workers AI.

Can I use Veil Translate for scanned PDFs?

No. It supports text-based PDFs only. Azure Translator documents OCR support for scanned PDFs; that may be a better workflow when OCR is required.

Which service should I use for personal data?

Start with your lawful basis, contract, data location, retention and access requirements. Veil Translate can reduce the data sent by masking reviewed values, but it does not replace a legal or security assessment.
